Hexham is a market town and civil parish in the English county of Northumberland. It is located south of the River Tyne, and was the administrative hub for the Tynedale area from 1974 to 2009. Smaller towns and villages around Hexham consist of Corbridge, Riding Mill, Stocksfield and Wylam to the east, Acomb and Bellingham to the north, Allendale to the south and Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle to the west. Newcastle upon Tyne is roughly 25 miles (40 km) towards the east. With reference to the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11829. Hexham's architectural landscape is dominated by Hexham Abbey. The current church largely dates from roughly 1170, built in the Early English Gothic style of architecture. The choir, north and south transepts and the cloisters, where canons studied and meditated, date from this period. The east end was rebuilt in 1860. The abbey stands at the west side of the market place, which is home to the Shambles, a Grade II covered market constructed in 1766 by Sir Walter Blackett. At the east end of the market place is the Moot Hall, a 15th-century gatehouse that pertained to the town's defences. The Moot Hall is a Grade I listed building, and was used as a court house until 1838. The Moot Hall now houses the Council offices of the Museums Department and the ground floor is an art gallery open to hire. Hexham won the Town award in the 2005 Britain in Bloom awards. In the same year Hexham was additionally named 'England's Favourite Market Town' by the publication 'Country Life'. FAQs

Can I carry out guttering work myself?

It’s recommended to use a professional guttering company to repair or replace guttering, as well as to carry out cleaning. These companies have the required insurance and will comply with health and safety standards, particularly when working at height.

How long does it take to get plans produced by a residential architect?

Generally the process for having plans produced will only take a month or two. Major works or new builds can take upto ten months to produce. This will depend on the requirements of your project and the number of technical drawings you need produced. An architect will always advise you based on the project how long these will realistically take.

How to choose an architect for home building?

When you’re trying to decide on an architect to hire, start by making sure that all the professionals you consider specialise in residential architectural services. The architect you choose needs to be an expert in and have plenty of experience working on similar projects to yours.

It’s also important to factor in what other customers think. Look for online reviews of the professionals you find, ask to see portfolios of their work and even ask for references. This will help to give you an idea of whether they’re skilled and reliable.

Make sure you also meet and have a discussion with any architects you’re considering hiring for your home building project. It’s vital for you to get on with them and to share the same vision, otherwise you’ll struggle to get the end result you want.

How much maintenance do gutters need?

The amount of maintenance will vary depending on the material of the gutter. However, all gutters should be cleaned regularly. Ideally cleaning should be carried out yearly, or more frequently if there are trees close to the guttering, this prevents overflows and problems elsewhere.
