Newbiggin-by-the-sea
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is a small town and also civil parish in Northumberland, England, on the North Sea coast. Once an essential port for shipping grain as well as a coal mining town, it is still a tiny fishing port making use of conventional coble watercrafts. Angling has always been connected with Newbiggin, although later lots of occupants were used in coal mining. By the Victorian era, Newbiggin was Northumberland's preferred seaside town, drawing in hundreds of site visitors each day in the summer season. In 1869, there were 142 cobles (fishing watercrafts) in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Newbiggin Colliery was sunk in 1908. The colliery closed in 1967, but at its height in 1940 1,400 males were used there. The previous Newbiggin Colliery Band is now the Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band, named for its president and previous participant, cornet tale James Guard. To day, there are 72 active business based in Newbiggin.
