Montacute
Montacute is a small village as well as civil parish in Somerset, England, 4 miles (6.4 kilometres) west of Yeovil. The village has a population of 831 (2011 census). The name Montacute is believed by some to derive from the Latin "Mons Acutus", describing the conically severe St Michael's Hill controling the town to the west. A different view is that it is called after Drogo de Montagu, whose family members originated from Montaigu-les-Bois, in the arrondissement of Coutances. Mortain held Montacute after 1066, Drogo was a close partner. The town is developed virtually totally of the neighborhood hamstone. From the 15th century until the start of the 20th century it developed the heart of the estate of the Phelips family members of Montacute House. The village has a fine medieval church, and also was the site of a Cluniac abbey, the gatehouse of which is currently a personal residence. At the centre of the village is a huge square known as the 'Borough' around which are grouped attractive cottages as well as a club, the Phelips Arms; there is a second pub and resort located in the town, called the King's Arms.
