Honiton

Honiton is a market town and civil parish in East Devon. It is located next to the River Otter, and is around 17 miles (27 km) north east of Exeter in the county of Devon. Honiton is at the junction of the A35, the A30 and the A373 roads. Honiton railway station is on the West of England Main Line that runs from London Waterloo to Exeter. Honiton has a population estimated at 11822. The town grew along the line of the Fosse Way, the ancient Roman road linking Exeter to Lincoln, on which it was a crucial stopping point. The place is spoken of in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Honetone, meaning 'Huna's tun' or 'farm'. It ended up being a valuable market town, known for its lace making that was offered by Flemish immigrants in the Elizabethan era. In the 17th century, great numbers of people produced lace by hand in their homes, and later on in the 19th century, Queen Victoria had her bridal gown crafted from Honiton lace, though the gown itself was made in the fishing village of Beer. The town also ended up being known for its pottery. Honiton is host to the annual Honiton Agricultural Show, a traditional celebration going back to 1890. The Hot Pennies ceremony takes place yearly on the first Tuesday after 19 July in the High Street of the town, and dates back to the reign of King Stephen. The event has its roots in the practice of the landed gentry taking delight in throwing hot pennies from windows to regional peasants, a seemingly humanitarian gesture resulting in burns. The custom also had the intention of encouraging people to take a trip to the town from the surrounding area to participate in a subsequent fair. For all of your home developments, make certain to identify credible contractors in Honiton to make certain of quality.

FAQs

how long does a loft conversion take?

If you’re about to carry out a loft conversion project, you’d probably be wondering how long it’ll take to complete the task. Well, you’re not alone! This is one of the most common questions when it comes to loft conversion projects, however, providing a set timeframe for completion of such projects is impossible as all loft conversions vary. There are different factors that can determine the duration of your project. These factors include, the materials to be used, the type of the proposed loft conversion, the kind of staircase you’ll like to have installed, the number of windows included, the number of rooms to be added as well as a number of other influencing factors. As a result of these variables, the milestones and timings provided are only to be taken as guidelines. If you’d really like to have a set date, you can get in touch with a professional for help.

Generally, it’ll take up to 8 weeks to complete a loft conversion project.

✓ The first week activities will include putting up scaffolding, receiving the first materials for the build and creating an opening in the roof to gain access to the loft space.

✓ In the second week, the structure of the roof will be ammended and more support added.

✓ Third week, the floor joists will be fitted, building of the loft conversion will start, completion of the external roof works and commencement of plumbing and electric works.

✓ Fourth week, complete the building, construct the loft floor, fit the roof windows, insulation, ventilation and internal stud walls.

✓ Fifth week, apply plaster and plasterboard to the room walls, create a staircase opening and fit the new staircase.

✓ Sixth week, plaster the staircase area, complete plumbing and electrical works, hang the doors, fit skirting, handrails and bannisters and start decoration.

✓ Seventh week, complete the decoration and clean and wipe out all wastes.

✓ Eight week, complete all the remaining tasks.

how disruptive is a loft conversion?

Asides the questions relating to planning permission of a loft conversion as well as the total cost of completing a loft conversion project, this is perhaps the most common question on the loft conversion subject matter. Before making an investment decision, many homeowners will want to know just how disruptive a loft conversion is. Well, we’ve all heard the several horror stories when loft conversion builder with dirty boots tramples all over the fresh and just-acquired shag pile or the noise of the construction loud enough to annoy neighbours from four blocks away or an obvious shortage of teabags, sugar and lots more. Good news is, the disruption of loft conversion is not as bad as people make out. Let’s have a look at how it works!

Just like all other major building projects, a loft conversion is disruptive to your property. However, no two loft conversions are the same, therefore some are certain to be more drastic and invasive than others. In the long run, the project is worth the stress and inconveniences caused and in most cases, it’s usually a very good investment.

Normally, an average loft conversion is expected to last for about 9 to 12 weeks (depending on the complexity of the loft conversion project some might take longer). Some of the factors that affects the duration of a project includes the type of the loft, the design of the loft as well as the style of the property.

Generally, a loft conversion is a lot less disruptive than say completely moving a home. It all has to do with how you’re able to deal with it as a person. And besides, the effect it’s going to have to a large extent depends on the company you hire. A good company will always look to ensure to keep disruptions to a minimal when carrying out the loft conversion project.

Can my loft be converted?

Many types of loft are suitable for a loft conversion. In general, you will need at least 2.3 metres of headroom in your existing loft. This is to make sure there is enough headroom after the conversion. Speak to a conversion specialist about the probability and possibility of doing this in your house.

Will I need planning permission to convert my loft?

Planning permission is not normally needed for a loft conversion as they are covered by permitted development rights. A conversion company will tell you if you do and help you with this. For more information, see our article about planning permission.
