It forms an element of the Greater Blackpool conurbation. The town was the first planned community of the age. For a lot of of the twentieth century, Fleetwood was a notable deep-sea fishing port, although, since the 1970s, the fishing business has declined precipitously and the town has been through economic difficulties. Fleetwood is in addition a seashore resort, in the role of a quiet contrast to nearby Blackpool.
