Alexandria
Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is situated on the River Leven, 4 miles (6 km) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It is the biggest town in the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed as a result of the textile industry. In 1715, the first bleachfields in the area were started at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the United States grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work in the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it too.
