Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, as well as the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It is governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
It borders the City of London and also the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth towards the west and also the London Borough of Lewisham to the east. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark includes a wide variety of housing, which includes council housing, like the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate plus the Heygate Estate to provide houses to low-income residents. About 31 percent of householders are owner-occupiers.
The borough is residence to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery plus the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
