Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, Area Durham, England. It is called after the castle around which it was developed. It is the primary settlement in the Teesdale location, and also is a popular tourist destination. The Bowes Museum has the best collection of European fine and attractive arts in the North of England, housed in an amazing 19th-century French-style chateau. Its most famous display is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art consists of job by Goya and El Greco. Barnard Castle remains on the north bank of the River Tees, contrary Startforth and 21 miles (34 kilometres) south-west of the county town of Durham. Close-by towns consist of Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the eastern as well as Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's biggest single employer is GlaxoSmithKline which has a manufacturing facility on the borders of town. Barnard Castle is for all functions (historic, ritualistic and also management) situated in Region Durham. The county boundary with the North Riding of Yorkshire was adjusted in 1967: that part of the town of Barnard Castle historically in Yorkshire was included in County Durham. Barnard Castle was the management centre of the former Teesdale area of County Durham until its abolition on 1 April 2009. The community is now carried out by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as principal authority and also by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a parish. The Community Council elects a ceremonial Town Mayor annually. It becomes part of the Bishop Auckland legislative constituency, which as of 2017 is represented in parliament by Helen Goodman of Work, though with a tiny bulk over the Conservatives. It remains in the North East England area, which functions as a constituency for the European Parliament. Between 1894 and also 1967 the community was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban District.
