Extensions such as garage conversions will often require supplementary damp proofing to be added through the conversion, as the existing garage normally has a single skin design for walls and floors, which was not designed to be in accordance with building regulations for habitable rooms. This damp proofing will have to be added to walls and floors. Furthermore, the roofing of the garage conversion will require water proofing. The damp proofing of the floor of the garage conversion will in most cases be achieved by employing a damp proof membrane. This membrane is available in either solid or liquid form. The damp proof membrane will be put down either on top of the existing concrete floor, underneath the new floor, or as part of both, depending on whether the floor will be a solid or a floating floor. In some garages, the walls have already been damp proofed, but this might have to be updated as part of the conversion to be able to adhere to current building regulations. The walls will need to be damp proofed in order to protect the brickwork from rotting slowly as moisture sets in. This is done by either utilising damp proof membranes, waterproof rendering, or cavity insulation, depending on the type of walls that are already in the garage. Damp proofing is an important part of the building regulations that the garage conversion should comply with, and so is it necessary to make sure that your garage conversion incorporates appropriate damp proofing methods.

Etchingham (population 806) is a town and civil parish in the Rother district of East Sussex in southerly England. The town lies around 15 miles (24 kilometres) southeast of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent and also 13 miles (21 km) northwest of Hastings, on the A265, half a mile west of its joint with the A21. Etchingham train station is on the Hastings Line to London Charing Cross and Cannon Street. Etchingham was an estate a long period of time before the Norman occupation of 1066; after this time the mansion was taken over by the Normans. In 1166 it was delegated the de Achyngham (Etchingham) family, who were widely known landowners of the time. The Etchingham family documents document that William was so delighted with his right-hand man that he offered him the land now known as Etchingham. The moated manor house, long since knocked down, stood at the point currently inhabited by the London to Hastings train line. Some of the rock from the mansion was most likely used in the building and construction of the station structures. There is one tale that a wonderful bell lay at the bottom of the moat surrounding the church and chateau, which it would never be seen up until six yoke of white oxen were given drag it up. Centuries have actually gone by, the moat is long gone and also no bell has actually emerged. The 14th-century church was originally built within the grounds of the mansion; evidence of the moat can still be seen.

Signs of rising damp tend to be close to the ground, usually no higher than a metre. It usually works its way up walls in horizontal lines. Penetrating damp usually develops in patches and can often be much higher up. For more advice, speak to a damp proofing professional.
Damp is a serious problem, particularly if you live in an old property, because it can lead to structural damage. This will cost you big money and could be very dangerous, to yourself and the property. Take damp seriously and get it inspected and resolved as soon as you discover it!
There are a few visible signs of damp, although it often goes undetected. However, in older or empty properties, this made become detectable through its smell. These include peeling paint and wallpaper, crumbling plaster, mould growth, black spots or spores on walls and ceilings, and rotting skirting boards and flooring.
You should make sure that all signs of damp have gone before you redecorate your walls. If you want to paint your walls with a water-permeable emulsion paint, you can usually do this after 1 or 2 months. For other types of decoration you should wait longer.
