Great Dunmow is a historical market community and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is situated on the north of the A120 road, approximately midway between Bishop's Stortford and Braintree, 6 miles east of London Stansted Airport. Originally the site of a Roman settlement on Stane Street, the town prospered throughout the Middle Ages. Numerous structures make it through from this duration, including a sixteenth-century town hall. Dunmow implies "Meadow on the Hill". [4] The settlement was variously described as Dunmow Magna, Much Dunmow, or many commonly Great Dunmow. Great Dunmow surrounds the former estate of Easton Lodge in the adjoining parish of Little Easton, a lodge coming from the Maynard household. One of the most notable participant, Frances Maynard, ended up being the Countess of Warwick and also later on a girlfriend of King Edward VII. As the Prince of Wales he was supposedly a routine visitor to the Estate, travelling from London on the train to Easton Lodge railway station. The initials "CW" are visible on a number of Victorian era homes in Great Dunmow. Called Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick she was a generous philanthropist in the local community. Since 2018, Robert Nicholson is Emeritus Mayor of Great Dunmow.
