Berwick-upon-tweed
Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town within the county of Northumberland. It is the northernmost town in England. It's positioned 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) south of the Scottish border, at the mouth of the River Tweed, on the east coast of the UK. It is 56 miles (90 kilometres) to the south east of Edinburgh, 65 miles (105 kilometres) north of Newcastle upon Tyne and 345 miles (555 kilometres) north of London. The 2011 UK Census recorded Berwick's population as about 12,000. A civil parish and town council were established during 2008. Berwick's origins are as an Anglo-Saxon settlement through the time of the Kingdom of Northumbria, which was annexed by England during the 10th century. The area was, for more than four hundred years, central to historical border wars among the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, and several occasions possession of Berwick changed hands between the two kingdoms. The final time it changed hands was when England retook it in 1482.
