Greenwich
The Royal Borough of Greenwich is a London borough in south-east London, England. Taking its name from the historic town of Greenwich, the London Borough of Greenwich was formed in 1965 by the amalgamation of the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich with a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich towards the east. The local council is Greenwich London Borough Council which meets in Woolwich Town Hall. The council's offices are also primarily based in Woolwich, the principle urban centre inside the borough. It covers an overall area of 18.28 square miles.
In line with population estimates from the middle of 2014, the borough has a permanent population of around 268678 inhabiants. The Prime Meridian running through Greenwich as well as the Greenwich Observatory is where the designation Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT started, and on which all world times are based.
In 2012, Greenwich was listed as a top ten international location by Frommer's, making it the only UK destination to become listed. It is also the home borough of professional football club Charlton Athletic. To mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, Greenwich became a Royal Borough on 3rd February 2012. This is partly a consequence of its historic links with the Royal Family, and to its UNESCO World Heritage Site status as residence of the Prime Meridian.
