Colyton

Colyton is a town in Devon, England. It lies within the East Devon local authority area. It is 3 miles (4.8 kilometres) from Seaton and also 6 miles (9.7 kilometres) from Axminster. Its population in 1991 was 2,783, minimizing to 2,105 at the 2011 Census. Colyton is a huge part of the Coly Valley electoral ward. The ward population at the above census was 4,493. Colyton first appeared as an ancient village around 700 AD and functions in the Domesday Book as 'Culitone'. The 3rd code of regulation of King Edmund I was released at Colyton in about 945. This helped to maintain feudal society, by specifying clearly its 4 columns: kingship, lordship, family members, and neighbourhood. It grew into an important farming centre as well as market community with a corn mill, saw mill, iron foundry as well as an oak bark tannery that is still working. Positioned 0.5 miles (0.8 kilometres) to the north of the town was Colcombe Castle, now knocked down, a former seat of the Courtenay household, Earls of Devon. Adhering to the attainder of the Marquis of Exeter the Courtenay lands escheated to the Crown, and also those within Colyton were marketed back for £1,000 to numerous locals of Colyton parish, as listed in a deed transcribed in the Letters as well as Documents of Henry VIII dated 6 January 1547, summarised as "John Clarke and others. Grant in complimentary socage, based on rental fees and so on (specified), for l,000 l, of the complying with lands (extents given) in the parish of Colyton, which are parcels of Colyton mansion, Devon, as well as belonged to Henry Marquis of Exeter, attainted". This was the beginning of the Feoffees of Colyton, who remained to keep in common different buildings in the parish. The community has been referred to as "the most defiant town in Devon" as a result of the number of its occupants that signed up with the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685.

FAQs

Do biomass boilers take up lots of space?

Many domestic biomass boilers are no bigger than a standard gas boiler. However, they do require a flue, a feeder and a space to store the fuel. These can be designed to suit many different properties and will fit in lots of homes or a garage or outbuilding.

Is a biomass boiler compatible with my existing central heating system?

Biomass boilers will work with existing central heating systems, presuming this is not decades old, whether they use radiators or under floor heating. A surveyor will check the existing system you have in place before quoting for or recommending a biomass boiler to you.

Do biomass boilers need lots of maintenance?

Biomass boilers do require some maintenance. Many manufacturers recommend servicing twice a year, although this is often included in the installation cost. Many systems have automatic fuel loading that removes the need to manually load fuel. You will need to remove the ash from the boiler, but this is as easy as emptying a vacuum cleaner.

Can I use a biomass boiler with other forms of heating?

Biomass boilers can be designed to work with other kinds of heating. The most common of these is solar thermal. This is a popular renewable energy pairing. Solar thermal heating will meet your hot water needs during the summer while a biomass boiler can operate as a backup during the winter when solar thermal panels do not perform as well.
