Kensington and Chelsea

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is an inner London borough of Royal borough status, to the west of the centre. The borough was created in 1965 from the former boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea. Kensington's Royal Borough status was inherited by the new borough. It covers an area of 4.68 square miles. As the smallest borough in London as well as the second smallest district in England, this urban area is among the most densely populated within the United Kingdom.

In 2005, the borough had more of its land covered by domestic buildings than anywhere else in England at 19 per cent, which is more than half of the national average. In addition, it had the fifth highest proportion of land covered by non-domestic buildings at 12 per cent.

The borough is immediately towards the west of the City of Westminster and to the east of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It consists of important museums and universities in Albertopolis, department stores including Harrods, Peter Jones and Harvey Nichols, and embassies in Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Kensington Gardens. It's home to the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's biggest. It includes many of the most expensive residential districts in London and even in the world, and also districts with high levels of social housing and poverty. The local authority is Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council. The borough's motto is Quam Bonum in Unum Habitare, which can be roughly translated as 'How good to dwell in unity'.

FAQs

What is an awning?

An awning usually attaches to an exterior wall of your home, business or outbuilding, or to the outside of a boat, campervan or caravan. It acts as an extra piece of roof or covering to shelter people from sun, rain or wind when they’re outside.

Lots of awnings are retractable, with either a manual or automatic folding mechanism. You also get static awnings that are up permanently. You often find awnings fixed over the top of doors or windows.

What size awning do I need?

If you’re considering getting an awning for the outside of your home or business, it’s vital to make sure it’s the correct size. This will help you get the right amount of shelter or shade you need, and ensure it looks great.

To get the best results, get your awning from a company who comes out to your property to measure. They’ll be experienced at doing this accurately, and will be able to add clearance distances where required. They might also be able to suggest the best designs to suit your property and needs.

What is a canopy?

A canopy is similar to an awning, but is typically bigger and freestanding. This makes them more versatile than awnings, as you can move them around to suit your needs. However, they’re not always as structurally robust as most awnings.

How to keep water from pooling on a canopy?

If you have an older canopy or have experienced a significant amount of rain recently, you might notice water pooling on your canopy. This is probably because there is some slack in your canopy, which allows water to collect instead of draining it off. See if there are places on your canopy frame where you can tighten it to keep it taught, and this should solve the problem.
