Artexing in Erskine

Artex is a material used for decorating surfaces in the interior of homes. It is typically chosen to apply a textured surface to ceilings. Artex is still popular as another option to smooth plaster ceilings, and a qualified painter and decorator will be able to apply artex in a number of different textured design finishes. Artex refers to a particular manufacturer, however there are additional manufacturers who manufacture equivalent building materials. Older artex ceilings may be repaired as well. There are a range products and applicators available to make this procedure as effortless as possible. There is a assortment of different alternatives for the designs of texture that artex could be used to create. It may be applied in stipple, swirl, or shell effects, all of which can be undertaken as a DIY task fairly easily. Skilled painters and decorators will be able to review with you which finish would match your space, and guarantee that artex is applied in a superior quality and consistent surface. Artex may also be painted over, and picking out a colour that complements the texture of the surface can regenerate an old ceiling and breathe life into a room.

Erskine

Erskine is a town in the council area of and county of Renfrewshire. It is situated in the West Central Lowlands of Scotland, resting on the southern bank of the River Clyde. The town is most typically identified for the Erskine bridge, which is the furthest west crossing point on the river, where it eventually grows to end up being the Firth of Clyde estuary. Being in the west of the Greater Glasgow conurbation, the town borders Bishopton and Renfrew, Inchinnan, Paisley and Glasgow International Airport. As such, it has come to be predominantly a commuter town. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town boasts a permanent population of around 15347, highlighting its significant development from being a small village settlement. The town's progression into exactly what it is today began from the middle of the 20th century when the Renfrewshire County Council proposed its 'New Community' scheme, which saw the population surge to 3000 locals. The development of a blend of privately owned and rented accommodation in 1971 helped the population to grow to 10000. Inspite of most of the residents being commuters, retail has a considerable role to play in the economy. The town's Bridgewater complex presents a large array of independent and commercial chain stores, dining establishments, fast food outlets, a butchers and an opticians, to name but a few. A number of other smaller retail sites can also be found in the town. Available to locals are also several leisure and sports activities. There are 2 exclusive golf courses and a play centre for children, along with multiple playing fields and a sports centre. In 2014, it was ranked among the most appealing postal code areas to live in Scotland. For all your house upgrades, make sure to make use of respected experts in Erskine to make certain of quality.

FAQs

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.
