Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It's located ten miles south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles to the west of Edinburgh, in addition to being close to other towns like Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it has been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 20,000, a study by the Halifax Building Society revealed that in the spring of 2005, the town was the UK's property prime location, seeing a rise in house prices by 46%. This led to the standard property price as being around £105,000. It's believed that the town dates from the seventeenth century, which originally contained a line of quarry workers' homes belonging to Mr. Bell, the proprietor of a stone quarry in the south of the town. The improvement of Bellshill, nevertheless, largely came about following the closure of the quarry at the start of the nineteenth century. Developments have continued all through the 20th century. Most recently, the Streetscape Project, a scheme which aims to achieve the town's renovation and modernisation of the town centre, took place between 2007 and 2010, which established a one way system around the main street making the area considerably more pedestrian-friendly. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised particularly for producing respected and influential popular music, with bands including the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub hailing from the town. A Channel 4 TV series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, often known as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
