Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was created in 1965 when three smaller sized council locations amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, along with the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It is governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
It borders the City of London and also the London Borough of Tower Hamlets towards the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth towards the west and the London Borough of Lewisham to the east. To the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark has a wide selection of housing, including council housing, including the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate and the Heygate Estate to supply houses to low-income residents. About 31 percent of householders are owner-occupiers.
The borough is residence to a variety of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery as well as the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
