Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was formed in 1965 when three smaller council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and also the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are within the London postal district.
The borough covers a total area of about 11.14 square miles. To the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. In line with population estimates produced during 2014, Southwark includes a permanent population of about 302538 people.
The borough is residence to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery plus the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
