Elland
Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Reported as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town stems from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land partially or entirely encompassed by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and established history as a manufacturing and trading town. The town was given a charter to hold a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be convened at the Manor of Elland and at two fairs over the course of the year. The town swiftly became a prime location for wool production, and its downturn in the 20th century had a pronounced impact on the population, with a large number of mills being converted to properties, if they were not demolished.
