Abergavenny
Abergavenny is a market town in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is about 15 miles west of Monmouth on two dual carriageways, and six miles from the English border. Unsurprisingly, the town is known as the 'Gateway to Wales'. Situated at the confluence of a tributary stream, the Gavenny as well as the River Usk, it is almost completely surrounded by two mountains, the Blorenge along with the Sugar Loaf, and 5 hills. It provides a route to the Black Mountains and also the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Offa's Dyke Path is nearby and the Marches Way, the Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all go through the town.
Historically the site of a Roman fort, Gobannium, it evolved into a mediaeval walled town within the Welsh Marches. In line with the 2011 Census, the town features a permanent resident population of 10078. Within this population, around 10 per cent speak Welsh, seeming to have improved drastically from the 2 per cent recorded in 1991. The town boasts the remains of a mediaeval stone castle constructed soon after the Noman conquest of Wales.
As a traditional market town, a wide number of markets are held inside the Market Hall, such as a retail marketplace, a farmers' market, an antique fair and also a craft fair. The town was also host to the 2016 National Eisteddfod of Wales, a yearly celebration of the culture and language in Wales. It tends to attract more than 150000 guests and over 250 stalls each year.
