Cottingham

Cottingham is a large village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is located to the northwest of the city of Kingston upon Hull, and it is 4.5 miles from the city centre. Home to a population of 17164, according to the 2011 Census, Cottingham is believed to be among the biggest villages in England. Typically, Cottingham was identified primarily for its springs, which formed a riverlet through the village and drove a mill in the village. The extraction of water on a level that was barely sustainable since the 1930s is thought to be the cause of the disappearance of the springs from the village. There are 2 primary shopping streets, Hallgate and King Street, in the village. They are situated by the medieval church, the council offices, library and the civic hall. Every Thursday, the village holds a market on Market Green. These locations are all a part of a conservation area, as specified by the 1990 Planning Act. The village is also the home of a number of significant buildings. The University of Hull uses the village for one of its accommodation dorms. This consists of the Lawns, Thwaite Hall and Needler's Hall, both of which are structures going back to the late 18th century that have been extended to house the trainee population. Other major houses include Southwood Hall, Newgate House, Eastgate House and Westfield House. The majority of Cottingham's houses are characterised by Victorian balconies constructed in the 2nd half of the 19th century and interwar and postwar housing. A several public houses remain in Cottingham, including the Blue Bell and the Duke of Cumberland on the market square. For all your home upgrades, make sure to make use of reputable contractors in Cottingham to make sure of quality.

FAQs

how to fit a double glazed window?

Did you just purchase a double glazed window and confused about how to have it installed? Fitting the window yourself can be quite easy with the help of this step by step guide. However, if you lack proper training or experience, we’d recommend you reach out to a trustworthy professional who can guarantee the best results for help. That said, now let’s take a look at the process.

• Remove the old windows by detaching the old beading and glass window safely. Then make some interval cuts using a hand saw before using a crowbar to pry it out.

• Cut the external double glazed window seal. Once done, take a measurement of the window area’s width once empty. Then transfer the measurement to the window sil to face outside and cut using a handsaw.

• Seal the window sil. Add a bead of clear silicone along both inside lip as well as the centre to seal the sil.

• Screw the double glazed window to the sil. Position the window on the top of the lipped section that was siliconed. Then pre-drill them together and screw in three places. You should make sure the screws do not go totally to the sil’s bottom.

• Install the double glazed window. After successfully screwing the double glazed window to the sil, you can now fit in the double glazing. Make use of packers to make sure it’s even in the slot.

• Screw the uPVC window to the wall. If you’re happy and satisfied with the position of the window, you can then pre-drill through the frame of the window and the brick wall. Once done, simply screw it in place using masonry screws or Spax screw as they do not require crawl plugs in bricks.

• Seal around the window. To do this, simply fill any gaps with expanding foam, wipe out the excess and seal with silicone.

Are A-rated windows worthwhile?

On the grand scale of things there isn’t a huge difference between B-rated windows and A-rated windows. Consumer watchdog Which? have calculated an extra 6.5% would be saved on energy bills with A rather than B rated panes. Be aware that A rated windows are slightly more expensive, however.

What happens to my old windows?

After fitting your new windows, your installer should take away and dispose of your old windows. If you want to keep them, just let your installer know before they start work. The UPVC frames are melted down and used on the unseen parts of new windows. Aluminium frames are re-smelted and wooden are broken down and used as chipboard.

Should I use a Fensa registered installer?

Using a Fensa registered installer isn’t compulsory but it helps to protect you from cowboys and rogue traders. It will also make life a whole lot easier in regards to Building Regulations. Replacement windows must meet a certain energy efficiency rating and once fitted you need a certificate to show your installation complies. By using a Fensa registered company they’ll issue this certificate, otherwise you’ll need the council to look at the new windows.
