The London Borough of Enfield is a London borough in north London with some districts within the borough straddling north-east London, England. It borders the London Boroughs of Barnet (towards the west), Haringey (towards the south) and Waltham Forest (to the south-east), the districts of Hertsmere (to the north-west), Welwyn Hatfield and Broxbourne (both to the north) in Hertfordshire, and Epping Forest (to the east) in Essex. The local authority is Enfield Council. It covers a total area of 31.74 square miles.
As outlined by population estimates from the middle of 2014, the borough has a permanent population of about 324574 inhabitants. The current borough was created in 1965 from the former areas of the Municipal Borough of Southgate, the Municipal Borough of Enfield and also the Municipal Borough of Edmonton. The Borough's Civic Centre is positioned in Silver Street, Enfield Town and is the location of the Council. Enfield Town is also home to the local credit union, North London Credit Union.
In 2007, Enfield Town centre completed a significant redevelopment project. An extension was added to the existing retail area with numerous new shops. In addition to this, a significant redevelopment of Edmonton Green, including the shopping centre, an adjacent municipal housing over a wide area, began in 1999 in order to supply new housing, health facilities, a new leisure centre, a supermarket, and numerous other civic features.
