Ascot is an affluent small town in the eastern region of the English county of Berkshire. It's located six miles (9.7 km) south of Windsor, four miles (6.4 kilometres) east of Bracknell and 25 miles (40 km) west of London. The town is comprised of three places: Ascot itself, North Ascot and South Ascot. In line with the 2001 Census, Ascot has a permanent population of around 11603. The town is most well-known for being the location of Ascot Racecourse, home of the famous Royal Ascot meeting. Held every year in June, Royal Ascot is one of the world's most famous race meetings, with lots of history which dates back to 1711. The royal family attend the meeting, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage, and it continues to be a major occasion within the British social calendar. Lots of the amenities in the town are connected to the racecourse, but there's a variety of shops in the wide High Street. These include a supermarket, petrol station and a lot of cafes. The vast majority of buildings are from the immediate post-war period with flats above the ground floor retail space. Heatherwood Hospital, the filming location for 'Carry on Matron', was in the western edge of the town. Ascot has a station on a bi-section of the railway line from London's Waterloo station to Reading, Bagshot, Aldershot and Guildford, originally constructed by the London and South Western Railway and now run by South West Trains. Because of the effective and frequent service on this line, Ascot has turned into a commuter centre with its residents travelling westwards to Reading and eastwards to London.
