Ascot
Ascot is an affluent little town within the eastern area in the English county of Berkshire. It's situated 6 miles (9.7 kilometres) south of Windsor, four miles (6.4 km) east of Bracknell and 25 miles (40 km) west of London. The town is made up of 3 areas: Ascot itself, North Ascot and South Ascot. Based on the 2001 Census, Ascot has a resident population of approximately 11603. The town is most famous for being the location of Ascot Racecourse, home of the famed Royal Ascot meeting. Held every year in June, Royal Ascot is one of the world's most famous race meetings, with lots of history dating back to 1711. The royal family members attend the meeting, arriving every day in a horse-drawn carriage, and it continues to be a major event within the British social calendar. Many of the amenities are related to the racecourse, but there's a selection of shops in the wide High Street. These consist of a supermarket, petrol station and several cafes. The majority of the buildings are from the immediate post-war period with flats above the ground floor retail space. Heatherwood Hospital, the filming location for 'Carry on Matron', was at the western edge of the town. Ascot boasts a station on a bi-section of the railway line from London's Waterloo station to Reading, Bagshot, Aldershot and Guildford, originally constructed by the London and South Western Railway and now operated by South West Trains. As a result of the effective and frequent service on this line, Ascot has grown into a commuter centre with its residents travelling westwards to Reading and eastwards to London.
