Soffits & Fascias in Banff

Fascias and soffits are an important component of most guttering systems. Not only do they provide support for the guttering itself, they improve the aesthetics of your property by creating a clean and tidy finish to the roofline. Fascias or fascia boards are horizontal planks that sit on the edge of the rafters of your roof, closing the end of the roof and offering the support that the guttering is fastened to. Soffits run underneath the fascia boards, closing the gap and protecting the underside of the rafter ends. Soffits are usually ventilated to make it possible for the roof timbers to breathe and to prevent any moisture buildup. Box ends are utilised where the horizontal fascia meets the diagonal barge board that runs up the edge of the roof profile, offering a neat finish to an otherwise ugly join.

Fascias and soffits are often constructed from either wood or UPVC. Wood fascias and soffits are typical on older properties and continue to be popular. However, timber fascias and soffits can rot with time and expose the rest of the guttering to problems or leaks. Recently, UPVC fascias and soffits have been increasingly popular as they provide a resilient choice that will not rot. UPVC fascias and soffits can be purchased in a variety of colours to complement any building, although white is very fashionable as it offers a traditional aesthetic. Fascias are also available in ogee moulded designs, where feature grooves are integrated. These can have an attractive effect.

Banff

Banff is a town in the Banff and Buchan area of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Banff is situated on Banff Bay and faces the town of Macduff across the estuary of the River Banff is a previous royal burgh, as well as is the county town of the historic area of Banffshire. Banff's very first castle was constructed to push back Viking intruders and a charter of 1163 AD shows that Malcolm IV was living there back then. During this period the town was an active trading centre in the "totally free hanse" of Northern Scottish burghs, in spite of not having its own harbour till 1775. The initial recorded Sheriff of Banff was Richard de Strathewan in 1264, and in 1372 Royal Burgh status was provided by King Robert II. By the 15th century Banff was one of three primary communities exporting salmon to the continent of Europe, along with Aberdeen and Montrose. There was a lot of lawlessness in seventeenth-century Scotland, and some of the worst wrongdoers were members of the nobility. According to records kept by historian William Cramond, the tolbooth (court house and prison) of Banff was, in 1628, the website of an altercation between Lord Banff and also James Ogilvie, his family member. Apparently, he struck James Ogilvie upon the head with a baton throughout a court hearing. Twenty of his friends and also fans then assaulted Ogilvie with swords before chasing him into the street and completing him off with a pistol shot. Banff as well as Macduff are divided by the valley of the River Deveron. This unforeseeable river was ultimately tamed by the seven curved bridge finished in 1779 by John Smeaton. An earlier bridge had been built in 1765, but was swept away in 1768. The old ferry was revived right into use, until it was lost in a flood in 1773. A public meeting was kept in 1800 as well as passed a resolution for the building of a turnpike road between Turiff and Banff as the existing roadway remained in a depressing state of repair service. Later on 19th century transportation renovations consisted of the structure of 2 railway lines, from Macduff to Turiff in 1860 as well as the Banff, Portsoy as well as Strathisla Railway in 1859 which connected to the primary Aberdeen to Inverness line. During the 19th Century the Banff Fishery Area (consisting of the ports from Crovie to Sandend) was important to the herring profession, with manufacturing coming to a head in 1853 at greater than sixty-thousand barrels, of which virtually thirty-four thousand were exported, nonetheless by 1912 production had decreased to simply over 8 thousand barrels. Presently, the languages spoken in the community and also in its area have a tendency to be the Doric language of Scots, and English.

    FAQs

how much to repair soffit and fascia?

The soffit and fascia is the outdoor underside region of your roof which would need to be repaired or replaced when it’s in a critical condition. Your soffit and fascia may actually require more frequent replacement or repair depending on the material that the soffit or fascia uses. If you notice your soffit and fascia needs to be replaced, then you’d probably also like to know how much it going to cost. Well, you’ve come to the right place! The price to replace a soffit and fascia can vary significantly which can be a bit annoying when you’re trying to calculate the overall cost you’ll be expected to pay.

The price of a soffit and fascia is based on the following variables:

✓ The materials you wish to use for the new fascia, soffit and guttering

✓ The type of the property. For instance, semi detached houses may come at a lower price due to the less roof space they require when compared to their counterparts, which can reduce the cost of replacement.

✓ If you’re going to also replace the gutter at the same time will also increase the cost of replacement.

✓ The current overall condition of the roof. For example, if you also have broken or slipping roof tiles, the soffits and fascias can be more difficult to replace, hence, increasing the cost of the project.

Generally, the average cost of fitting soffits and fascias as replacement options for your homes will range between £1200 - £3,000. What’s more? Soffits and fascias normally have a per metre cost. The average price of soffits and fascias per metre can range between £100 to £130 when you opt for a white uPVC option.

What colour should soffits and fascias be?

Soffits and fascias are available in lots of different colours. These include black, grey, brown, white and cream. It’s also possible to get them in brighter colours like reds, blues and greens.

What colour soffits and fascias you get is entirely up to you, unless you live in a listed building, in which case some rules may apply. Most people choose a colour that matches their roof, walls or window frames to give their property an attractive, colour-coordinated look.

    what is a soffit?

Soffit is a word gotten from two languages - French and Latin, whereby the root word implies to “form as a ceiling in French, while it means to “to fix underneath in Latin. Basically, soffit is a portion of the ceiling that has been constructed lower than the area that surrounds it. And even though they aren’t that much popular in recent times, they happen to be a common feature in kitchens of older homes in the UK. At times, a soffit can occupy the whole room or area in a home.

Homeowners across the globe make use of this feature mostly as a decorative element in the room , however, there are also times in which they may be required for various purposes. These purposes include using soffits to conceal plumbing pipes or, heating or cooling ducts, which is often the case when sofits are constructed at the lower levels of homes. They’re also often incorporated in bathrooms or kitchens as soffits house light fixtures. For instance, recessed light fixtures fitted over kitchen or bathroom sinks are mostly fitted into a soffit. What’s more? Soffit can also be required in a room because of the home’s structure as the feature can be used to hide a structural beam.

If you happen to own an older home and you’d like to remove an existing soffit, the first step is to ensure that its safe to carry out such plan. You should firstly check for any electrical lines, ductwork, lighting or structural problems that may exist prior to the commencement of the project. If you’re not sure or confident enough to pull this off, then it’s advisable to consult a professional contractor before you proceed.

Which material is best for soffits and fascias?

In general uPVC is used for soffits and fascias as it is very strong and durable. It also requires very little maintenance. However, wood can be used and is still popular on listed properties as it retains the original material. Older and listed buildings may require more traditional materials to be used.
