Montacute is a little village and also civil parish in Somerset, England, 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Yeovil. The town has a population of 831 (2011 census). The name Montacute is thought by some to stem from the Latin "Mons Acutus", describing the conically intense St Michael's Hill controling the town to the west. An alternative sight is that it is called after Drogo de Montagu, whose household stemmed from Montaigu-les-Bois, in the arrondissement of Coutances. Mortain held Montacute after 1066, Drogo was a close associate. The village is developed nearly entirely of the neighborhood hamstone. From the 15th century until the start of the 20th century it created the heart of the estate of the Phelips household of Montacute House. The village has a great middle ages church, as well as was the website of a Cluniac abbey, the gatehouse of which is currently an exclusive house. At the centre of the village is a big square known as the 'Borough' around which are organized attractive cottages and a pub, the Phelips Arms; there is a second public house and hotel located in the village, called the King's Arms.
