Alexandria
Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is located on the River Leven, 4 miles (6 km) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It is the largest town in the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed as a result of the textile sector. In 1715, the first bleachfields in the area were created at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the USA grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Quickly, textile work within the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it too.
