Abbey Wood is a residential area of South East London inside the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley. It gets its name from Lesnes Abbey Wood, which used to belong to the monks of Lesnes Abbey. It's located south of Thamesmead and is 10.6 miles east of Charing Cross. Abbey Wood features a population of no more than 24,000 and is said to be a quiet location.
The district is popular amid commuters; it has an average age of 34 and its railway station was opened in 1849 and currently it offers services to Charing Cross, Cannon Street and areas in Kent as a loop service. In addition there are buses that go to Thamesmead, Lewisham and Peckham.
Abbey Wood is recognised for its caravan park settled amongst the Abbey Woods. The woods have a park plus a football pitch, as well as the neighbouring Bostall Gardens and Bostall Heath have plenty of sports facilities. Part of the woods is a site of special scientific interest because it has fossils going back as far as 23-66 million years ago.
