Newmilns
Newmilns and also Greenholm is a tiny burgh in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It has a population of 3,057 individuals (2001 census) as well as rests on the A71, around seven miles east of Kilmarnock as well as twenty-five miles southwest of Glasgow. It is situated in a valley where the River Irvine runs as well as, with the adjoining communities of Darvel and Galston, creates a location referred to as the Upper Irvine Valley (locally described as The Valley). As the name suggests, the burgh exists in 2 parts - Newmilns to the north of the river as well as Greenholm to the south. The river also separates the churches of Loudoun and Galston, which is why the burgh, although usually described as Newmilns, has actually preserved both names. Of the mills themselves, little bit now remains. The last in operation was Pate's Mill, which remained on Brown Street opposite the railway station (contemporary Vesuvius building). Renowned in Allan Ramsay's poem, "The Lass o Pate's Mill", it was knocked down in 1977 and all that now stays belongs to the mill's outside wall. The only mill building still undamaged can be discovered at the foot of Ladeside. Currently used as real estate, Loudoun Mill (formerly the Meal Mill/ Corn Mill of Newmilns) remained in use from 1593 until it stopped producing meal in the 1960s. In 1970, the mill wheel was removed and the lade filled in, with the only staying idea of the site's previous usage being a slogan, "No Mill, No Meal - JA 1914" inscribed on the outer wall.
