Morpeth is a town in Northumbria in the north-east of England, resting on the River Wansbeck. The 2011 census records the population of Morpeth as 14,017, which is up from the 13,833 of the 2001 census. Strangely, the name essentially means 'murder path', though the case that brought about this rather gruesome appellation is no longer known. The town of Morpeth formed at an important crossing point of the River Wansbeck.
