Cold loft space insulation is the least expensive choice, merely entailing placing insulation over as well as above wooden joists. Nonetheless, as this only avoids warmth leaving the living area of the house, it isn't suitable for those wanting to concealed the loft right into a living area. Warm loft insulation is placed straight under the roofing system, and also therefore will maintain the loft space at a constant temperature throughout the year. As such, it is ideal if the loft is made use of as a space. Warm loft insulation is available in different types, be it glass-wool or polystyrene. Spray foams can also be used, however sometimes may disagree.

Types of loft space insulation

Blanket Insulation

One of the most typical kind of loft space insulation, this comes in rolls of rock, glass or mineral fiber (we utilize Earthwool by Knauf which is a truly great environmentally friendly choice), or else foil-backed really felt. It's typically the most inexpensive alternative and good all-purpose insulation, particularly for in between joists. It's the simplest kind to fit yet isn't suitable for the roofing system.

Loose-fill Insulation

This sort of insulation consists of a loosened, light-weight, product, such as cork granules, cellulose fibre, mineral wool or even recycled newspaper. It can be utilized to top up existing insulation or by itself. The major disadvantage is it isn't extremely protected and can be really untidy!

Sheet Insulation

Firm boards of either artificial or all-natural products, this is the most effective service for protecting the underside of your roofing system. The boards give very efficient insulation for your loft room as well as can also be decorated over. The downside is that sheet insulation has a tendency to be one of the most costly type.

Blown-fibre Insulation

Loosened materials of different kinds blown in between joists, this is suitable for hard-to-get-at places but doesn't supply a full remedy, specifically in a draughty loft. It's also expensive as well as needs to be mounted by a expert.

Baldock

Baldock is a historic market town inside the local government district of North Hertfordshire in the ceremonial county of Hertfordshire, England where the River Ivel rises. It is positioned 33 miles (53 km) north of London, and boasts a population of about 9900. Nearby towns are Royston towards the northeast, Letchworth and Hitchin to the southwest and Stevenage to the south. The contemporary layout of the town and several buildings in the centre date back to the sixteenth century, with the earliest dating back to the fourteenth century. The town thrived where the old Great North Road and the Icknield Way crossed. Regardless of the construction of the A1(M) motorway in 1963, which bypassed the town, and which was named the Baldock Bypass for some years, it was nevertheless a major traffic bottleneck until March 2006, when a new bypass removed the A505 road, part of the old Icknield Way which was east of Baldock. Since the 16th century, Baldock has been a centre for malting, subsequently becoming a regional brewing centre with at least 3 large brewers still manufacturing at the end of the 19th century, in spite of a decline in demand for the varieties of beer made locally. The 1881 Census notes roughly thirty drinking establishments. During the early twentieth century, a sizeable number of pubs continued to operate, several of which were sustained by the adjacent and much bigger town of Letchworth, which had no alcohol retailers before 1958, and had only two pubs and a single hotel bar until the mid-1990s. Its larger population had for many years visited both Baldock and Hitchin for refreshment. For all of your residence improvement jobs, ensure that that you use trustworthy experts in Baldock to ensure that you get the top quality service.

FAQs

how does loft insulation work?

A lot of an uninsulated property’s heat is lost through the roof and that’s even more alarming, when you realize this figure is up to a quarter of the total heat of the house. Hence, the tremendous importance of preventing this heat loss through loft insulation which will go a long way to help you against spending unnecessary thousands of pounds on heating bill as well as energy loss.

Loft insulation is an effective method to achieve the desired result, however the question is, how exactly does it work? Well, it’s time to find out!

Using either a fireplace or central heating to heat up your home, a large quantity of that heat would be lost through the roof of your home. Generally, heat rises and when it does, there’s simply no way to prevent it - it’s just science. Escaping by both the conduction and convection methods via your roof, the heat escaping through your ceiling, into the loft space and out into the open air outside can only be significantly reduced by laying loft insulation.

Generally, the added layer of insulation works by trapping the heat inside the room below the loft so as to enable the air within your house to stay warmer for longer. What’s more? The layer of insulation also keeps cold air from the outside from entering your home. As a result, you don’t have to heat your home as much in order to achieve the same temperature for each individual room. Over time, just by doing this you can potentially save hundreds pounds. Getting it installed in your home may actually seem a bit expensive at first, but it’s something that’ll eventually pay off.

how much loft insulation do I need?

Over the years, more and more home and property owners are beginning to realize the huge benefits that can be derived from loft insulation being a worthwhile investment. It’s quite worrisome the way in which energy bills have soared over the past 10 years and loft insulation is a considerable affordable energy efficiency measure that can go a long way to help increase your home’s energy savings.

As far back as the 1980’s, the standard when it comes to insulation thickness was 25 mm to 50 mm which was, at the time, considered to be sufficient. However, building regulations have changed the norm that now states that a new build needs to possess 270 mm of insulation in the loft in order to achieve the required u-value of less than 0.16/m2k based on the standard rock wool or sheep wool insulation.

Generally with loft insulation, there’s a law of depreciating returns which implies that the first couple of insulation centimetres will save you many times the cost of the installation, however an extra layer or centimetre is going to add less value to the point where it’ll no longer be wise or worthwhile to add any further centimetre. Therefore, with cheaper energy prices 30 years back, that additional couple of centimetres was not just worthwhile, but with the recent alarming rises in costs of fuel, that additional £10 savings per year has all of sudden changed to £30 which makes it become a lot more attractive.

If you already have 270 mm of loft insulation, regardless of the material you’re looking to add you’re most likely not going to benefit from a top up. The cost of the materials and installation will definitely be too high for the couple of pounds it’ll save you per year.

Will insulation save me money on my energy bills?

This depends on the amount of insulation already present in your property. However, adding insulation has been proven to improve the energy efficiency of your home and decrease your heating bills, this is more obvious in older properties or where single glazing is still in situ.

how much is loft insulation?

More often than not, several homeowners fail to realize there’s so much value sitting right under their roof - the loft. When a loft is insulated, there are so many juicy benefits that can be derived. It can go a long way to save increase you energy savings and several more functions. Therefore, if you really wish to maximize the space under your home’s roof, you’d have to considering insulating it. So how much would it cost to have your loft insulated? Here, you’ll discover the cost of insulating your lofts so you that you can set a budget and start to plan.

The cost of insulating a loft is actually affordable for several individuals, however, this depends on a wide range of factors such as the size of the house as well as the type of insulation being installed. One significant factor is the insulating material that you choose to install. If done properly, you’d be able to prevent heat from escaping through the roof of the house which helps improve energy efficiency and ultimately, save you some money on heating bills.

If you’d prefer to make it a DIY project and you go for a blanket insulation it costs about £5 per m2. therefore, this will cost within the range of £100 to about £150 for a small home.

For a professional service, you’ll be provided with a quote for both the materials and labour. The amount will be based on the number of insulation required, the company hired, your location as well as the method selected. The price to purchase and install blanket insulation  would be between the range of £300 to £400 depending on the size of your home.
