Loft conversion companies in Linlithgow

Are you thinking about a loft conversion in order to open space in your home and avoid the need to relocate? Then make use of our no cost and easy service to compare prices and get the best price for the work you need completed.

Loft conversions are proving to become increasingly popular in the UK. In most houses the attic accounts for unused space which could be put to better use. Converting can change the space into a bedroom, bathroom, playroom or even ensuite bedroom.

In fact there's lots of potential to converting your attic, such as the extra value for the home which can be up to 20%. Attic conversions are also advised over a house extension since the infrastructure is already in place. Plus, you won't be taking away any garden space.

If a attic conversion would benefit your home and you're interested in more room, compare and contrast quotations from reliable companies in Linlithgow and get the best deal for the work you want completed.

Linlithgow

Linlithgow is a royal burgh in West Lothian, Scotland. It is West Lothian's county town, as seen in the county's alternate name of Linlithgowshire. Linlithgow lies in the north-east of West Lothian, next to the border with Stirlingshire. It lies 20 miles (30 kilometres) west of Edinburgh along the main railway route to Glasgow. Previous to the development of the M8 and M9 motorways, together with the launching of the Forth Road Bridge, the town was situated on the principal road from Edinburgh to Stirling, Perth and Inverness while the canal system linked the burgh to Edinburgh and Glasgow. The neighboring town of Blackness once worked as the burgh's port. Linlithgow is surmounted by its nearby hill, Cockleroi. An ancient town, it lies south of its 2 most popular landmarks: Linlithgow Palace and Linlithgow Loch, and north of the Union Canal. With Saint Michael as the partron saint, the town's adage is 'St. Michael is kinde to straingers'. A statue of the saint carrying the burgh coat of arms stands on the high street. Two big areas of the northern side of the High Street were knocked down in the 1960s and replaced by flats and public buildings in the brutalist design typical of that time period of time. Though these structures were welcomed at the time as being a huge improvement on the cramped and run-down traditional accommodation, they have required considerable repairs and maintenance and restoration for many years. With a population of around 19000, the town is popular with the middles classes and commuters thanks to effective transportation links and high quality schooling. For all of your house upgrades, make sure to make use of reliable experts in Linlithgow to make certain of quality.

FAQs

Will I need planning permission to convert my loft?

Planning permission is not normally needed for a loft conversion as they are covered by permitted development rights. A conversion company will tell you if you do and help you with this. For more information, see our article about planning permission.

what is a hip to gable loft conversion?

This is a type of loft conversion that extends your roof on the sloping side. It is a great option to go for especially where a hipped roof effectively makes the usable floor area a lot smaller which can be a tricky affair when it comes to putting in a new staircase. Here, the roof is extended from the current ridge in such a way that it effectively fills the gap between them. As a result, this turns the hip (in a hipped roof) into a gable to create space in your roof for a loft conversion - hence the name “hip to gable.

The new gable can be done in whatever way that suits both your taste as well as your property. You can make the new gable construction in woods and then tiled to match your existing roof while you can also go for other options such as brick block pebbledash or rendering. You are also free to fit in a new window into the loft conversion end so as to allow for natural light into the loft space.

A hip to gable loft conversion is mostly found on both semi detached and end terrace buildings, particularly those constructed in the 1930s. Overall, this type of loft conversion is particularly ideal for homes that features a hipped roof and with a sloping roof at the side of the property. Some detached properties can also possess a hipped roof on the side - and as such, a double hip to gable loft conversion can also be deal as it’ll create more loft space for usage. If your home fits into the bill, then you should be aware that once the project is completed, you’ll have plenty of usable space available to both you and your loved ones.

do you need planning permission for a loft conversion?

Typically, loft conversions do not require planning permission except in certain situations. They’re usually covered under what’s known as Permitted Development. Certain building works like loft conversion, rear extension and conservatories are granted planning permission by local authorities. Permitted Development, however, gives you a free range to improve your home without having any issues from the councils or regulations. Before your planned loft conversion can be covered under Permitted Development, there are some certain criteria that must be met. This criteria includes the following:

✓ The extension must not go beyond the existing slope of the roof at the front of the house.

✓ The loft space converted must not go beyond 40 cubic metres in a terraced house.

✓ The roof’s height must not be increased by the extension.

✓ The loft space converted must not reach beyond 50 cubic metres in a detached or semi detached house.

✓ The plan for the extension mustn’t involve structures like balconies, verandas or anything other structures of this nature.

✓ The roof extension should be positioned as far back as possible or at least 20cm from the existing eaves.

✓ The side that faces the window openings should be at least 1.7m beyond the floor and the windows should also be obscured.

✓ The roof extension must not overhang the existing roof or wall of the house.

✓ The materials that are to be used must be similar or the same to the materials that has already been used on the house’s exterior.

However, you should bear in mind that there are some properties that are exempt from Permitted Development. Examples of these type of properties include conservation areas, Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage sites. Permitted Development does not also provide coverage for listed buildings.

how much value does a loft conversion add?

When its impossible to build out and create more space sideways, why can’t you look upwards? As more and more homeowners in the UK are carrying out their loft conversion project, one question that keeps popping up is the amount of value the loft conversion can add to their homes. However, this is a question that is impossible to provide a single and precise answer to. This is because the value that’ll be generated by a loft conversion is largely dependent on a wide range of influencing factors. To give you a vague idea of the loft conversion value to a property, we’ve put forward a research carried out by industry experts so you can know what you’re in for.

Nationwide carried out a research which shows clearly that a loft conversion including an additional bedroom as part of the building plan will increase a house’s value by up to 21 percent. Since the number of rooms a house has is one of the main metrics for house valuations, loft conversion comes in pretty handy as it’s a great and easy way to convert your house from a 4 bedroom house to a 5 bedroom house prior to sale.

Apart from the financial value aspect, loft conversion also adds more value to your lifestyle which is very unlike nearly other financial investments you can make. More space in your house automatically means more storage or a new room as you wish. A new room can be for a growing family or probably to serve as a guest room. It can also be used as a study space or even an office especially with the rapidly growing rate of people working from home. With loft conversion, the possibilities in terms of value are simply endless!
