Isle Of Benbecula
Benbecula is an island of the Outer Hebrides, in the Atlantic Sea off the west shore of Scotland. In the 2011 census it had an usually resident population of 1,283, with a substantial portion of Roman Catholics. It creates part of the area administered by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar or the Western Isles Council. The island is about 12 km from west to eastern and also a similar range from north to southern. It lies between the islands of North Uist and South Uist; it is attached to both by road embankments. Traveling to any one of the other Hebridean islands, or to the British landmass, is by air or sea. Benbecula Airport on the island has everyday flights to Glasgow, Stornoway and Barra. A straight solution to Inverness was presented in 2006 yet discontinued in May 2007. There are no straight ferryboat services from Benbecula to the landmass, however a solution operated by Caledonian MacBrayne from Lochboisdale on South Uist offers a five-hour going across to Oban on the landmass, whilst an additional service from Lochmaddy on North Uist offers a two-hour going across to Uig on the Inner Hebridean island of Skye, and for this reason to the landmass using the Skye Bridge. Ferry services from the islands of Berneray (linked by embankment to North Uist) and Eriskay (linked to South Uist) attach to the various other Outer Hebridean islands of Harris and Barra respectively. There is a thick cluster of lochs throughout practically the whole island, as well as nearly all of the island is listed below 20 metres in elevation.
