Devizes

Devizes is a market town and civil parish in the centre of Wiltshire in England. Set on a hill at the east side of the Vale of Pewsey, the town lies approximately 10.5 miles (16.9 kilometres) southeast of Chippenham and about 11 miles (18 kilometres) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. Based upon the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11715. Its development has taken place around the 11th century Norman castle. During the 12th and 13th centuries, artisans and traders set up companies to serve the inhabitants of the castle. The very first registered market in Devizes goes back to 1228. The original market was in the large area outside St Mary's Church, in lieu of in the existing Market Place, which at that time would have been within the castle's outer bailey. Devizes in the present day functions as a centre for banks, solicitors and stores and has an open market place where a market is held once a week on Thursdays. It has about five hundred listed structures, which is a large number for a town of its size, and some noteworthy churches, a Town Hall and a green at the heart of the town. The town draws in a fair amount of tourism as a result of its proximity to Avebury, Stonehenge and Salisbury. Regional interests feature Wiltshire Museum, Caen Hill Locks, the Kennet and Avon Canal, seasonal crop circles, and the White Horse. ✓ The roof extension should be positioned as far back as possible or at least 20cm from the existing eaves.

✓ The side that faces the window openings should be at least 1.7m beyond the floor and the windows should also be obscured.

✓ The roof extension must not overhang the existing roof or wall of the house.

✓ The materials that are to be used must be similar or the same to the materials that has already been used on the house’s exterior.

However, you should bear in mind that there are some properties that are exempt from Permitted Development. Examples of these type of properties include conservation areas, Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage sites. Permitted Development does not also provide coverage for listed buildings.
