Lairg is a village as well as parish in Sutherland, Scotland. It has a population of 891 and also goes to the south-eastern end of Loch Shin. Lairg is unusual in the north Highlands, if not distinct, in being a large negotiation that is not on the shore. Among the factors that Lairg is a little bigger than various other non-coastal Highland villages is its central area within the region of Sutherland. Having 4 roadways which meet in the town, it used to be called "The Crossroads of the North". In the 19th century, it was provided with a railway station, on what is now the Far North Line. This growth suggests that the north-west of Sutherland is currently less complicated to reach. (The Far North Line links Inverness in the south with Thurso as well as Wick in the north.).
