Faringdon is a historic market town in the Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire, England. Within the historic borders of Berkshire, it is 18 miles (29 km) south-west of Oxford, 10 miles (16 kilometres) north-west of Wantage and also 12 miles (19 km) east-north-east of Swindon. It is a huge parish, its lowest parts reaching the River Thames in the north as well as its highest ground getting to the Ridgeway in the south. Faringdon was the western community in Berkshire up until the 1974 boundary adjustments transferred it to Oxfordshire. The civil church is officially Fantastic Faringdon to differentiate it from Little Faringdon in West Oxfordshire. The 2011 Census offered a population of 7,121. On 1 February 2004, Faringdon was given Fairtrade Town status, as the first Fairtrade Town in South East England. It is the base for Faringdon Enterprise Gateway, which aids and encourages organisations in country west Oxfordshire.
