Pevensey
Pevensey is a village and also civil parish in the Wealden district of East Sussex, England. The main village lies 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 km) inland from Pevensey Bay. The negotiation of Pevensey Bay creates part of the parish. It was right here that William the Conqueror made the landing in his invasion of England in 1066 after going across the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the town was provided an imperial charter by King John and was controlled by Pevensey Corporation. With the decrease in the community's importance by the 19th century, the Corporation was ultimately dissolved in 1886 as well as the community shed its district status. The documents of the Corporation are held in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, and also a voluntary body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was created to manage the home which had previously come from the Corporation, most especially the Old Court House. Pevensey is now a village, with a parish council consisting of twelve chosen councillors. 3 councillors are elected to the Wealden Area Council to stand for Pevensey; the Member of Parliament is Hugh Merriman, who represents the Bexhill as well as Battle Constituency, of which Pevensey is component. Pevensey is also part of the selecting ward called Pevensey as well as Westham. The population of this ward at the 2011 Census was 9,467.
