Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a market community in Teesdale, Area Durham, England. It is called after the castle around which it was built. It is the primary settlement in the Teesdale area, and also is a preferred tourist location. The Bowes Museum has the best collection of European fine as well as attractive arts in the North of England, housed in a spectacular 19th-century French-style estate. Its most famous exhibition is the 18th-century Silver Swan robot, though art includes work by Goya as well as El Greco. Barnard Castle rests on the north financial institution of the River Tees, opposite Startforth and also 21 miles (34 kilometres) south-west of the county town of Durham. Neighboring towns consist of Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the eastern and also Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's biggest single company is GlaxoSmithKline which has a manufacturing facility on the borders of town. Barnard Castle is for all purposes (historical, ritualistic and management) located in Region Durham. The area boundary with the North Riding of Yorkshire was changed in 1967: that part of the community of Barnard Castle historically in Yorkshire was included in County Durham. Barnard Castle was the management centre of the former Teesdale district of County Durham till its abolition on 1 April 2009. The community is now provided by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as principal authority and also by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a parish. The Town Council chooses a ceremonial Town Mayor yearly. It belongs to the Bishop Auckland legislative constituency, which as of 2017 is represented in parliament by Helen Goodman of Work, though with a small bulk over the Conservatives. It is in the North East England area, which works as a constituency for the European Parliament. In between 1894 as well as 1967 the town was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban District.
