Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a market community in Teesdale, Area Durham, England. It is called after the castle around which it was constructed. It is the primary settlement in the Teesdale area, and also is a prominent visitor location. The Bowes Museum has the most effective collection of European fine and also attractive arts in the North of England, housed in a stunning 19th-century French-style estate. Its most renowned display is the 18th-century Silver Swan robot, though art includes work by Goya as well as El Greco. Barnard Castle rests on the north bank of the River Tees, opposite Startforth and 21 miles (34 km) south-west of the county town of Durham. Neighboring communities consist of Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the eastern and also Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's biggest single company is GlaxoSmithKline which has a production facility on the borders of town. Barnard Castle is for all functions (historic, ceremonial and management) situated in County Durham. The region border with the North Riding of Yorkshire was adjusted in 1967: that part of the town of Barnard Castle historically in Yorkshire was included in County Durham. Barnard Castle was the administrative centre of the previous Teesdale area of County Durham till its abolition on 1 April 2009. The community is now carried out by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as principal authority and by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a parish. The Town Council elects a ceremonial Town Mayor annually. It is part of the Bishop Auckland parliamentary constituency, which since 2017 is represented in parliament by Helen Goodman of Work, though with a tiny majority over the Conservatives. It is in the North East England area, which serves as a constituency for the European Parliament. Between 1894 and also 1967 the town was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban District.
