Ivybridge

Ivybridge is a town and civil parish in the South Hams, in Devon, England. It lies about 9 miles (14.5 kilometres) east of Plymouth. It is at the southern extremity of Dartmoor, a National Park of England and Wales and sits along the A38 'Devon Expressway' road. According to the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11851 individuals. Detailed in records as early as the 13th century, Ivybridge's early history is marked by its status as an essential crossing-point over the River Erme on the Exeter-to-Plymouth route. In the 16th century, mills were built using the River Erme's power. The parish of Saint John was formed in 1836, with Ivybridge becoming a civil parish in 1894. It emerged as a town in 1977. The early urbanisation and advancement of Ivybridge mainly accompanied the Industrial Revolution. When the South Devon Railway Company developed its train route through Ivybridge in the 19th century, a paper mill was constructed along with it, which brought about an increase in housing close by. The paper mill closed in the beginning of the 21st century, after being in operation for over 150 years in the town, and the buildings are being converted to homes and shops. The shopping area is mainly along Fore Street, with some little shops and restaurants situated in the Glanvilles Mill shopping centre which is accessible from Fore Street. The shopping centre includes over 35 shops, which includes both local and national chain stores, as well as restaurants and cafés. Although occasionally pertained to as a dormitory town, lots of people work in the town itself, and farming continues to play an economic role for Ivybridge's hinterland. The area bordering Ivybridge is practically entirely farmland. For all your home makeovers, be sure to find reputable specialists in Ivybridge to make certain of quality.

FAQs

what kind of paint to use on exterior brick?

What Kind Of Paint To Use On Exterior Brick?

If you’re thinking about painting your exterior brick, you’d probably be wondering the kind of paint that’ll be most suitable for the project. If yes, you’re definitely not alone! Bricks are widely known for being notoriously difficult to paint due to their porousness and can also absorb paint. However, if you’re able to purchase the right type of paint and carefully prepare for your home’s brick exterior, you can make the process a whole lot more easier and cleaner while also giving your home a lot more updated look. It’s usually cheap, appealing and even protects your bricks from the elements which makes it even more durable.

The best type of paint to purchase is the elastomeric paint which provides the highest level of longevity. It’s actually more expensive than acrylic paint but it clearly outworks 100% acrylic paint by double in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. The elastomeric paint is also super resistant to cold, heat as well as sunlight which makes it perfect for outdoor application. What’s more? It’s also dense enough to fill in cracks in the bricks but in such cases you might need to apply two coats. Overall, if you happen to stay in an inclement weather prone region, an elastomeric paint will help protect your home’s brick surface.

However, if you’re on a tight budget you can also consider getting an acrylic latex paint. This is a lot cheaper than elastomeric paint, but it’s also a great painting option for exterior bricks as it permits moisture to leave the bricks’ surface and helps to prevent mildew. Furthermore, you’ll only need to apply just a coat of acrylic paint.

how to remove old exterior paint?

How To Remove Old Exterior Paint

When the paint of your house is starting to peel, there’s the need to take a swift action. While some homeowners opt to cover it with vinyl siding or replace it with fibre cement siding, there’s no reason why you would want to hide the exterior of your house if it still looks great. When you don’t want to hide the beauty of your exterior, the only other option you’ve got is stripping or removing of the old paint. So how do you remove old exterior paint without much hassle? Let’s take a look!

✓ Propane blowtorch. Due to its affordability and effectiveness, this blowtorch has been one of the most popular means of removing old exterior paint amongst homeowners for quite some time. It makes use of high heat to soften the acrylic-latex paint which makes it easy to peel off with a putty knife. However, it can also be very risky to use as it’s always a dangerous game when it comes to open flames. What’s more? Applying an open flame to lead-based paint may release toxic lead fumes, therefore you’d have to be very careful if you wish to use this method.

✓ Electric sanders. Belt sanders are a great option to removing old exterior paint as they’re able to strip off the paint quickly. However, this must be done gently and carefully as you’d risk gouging the wood if you lay into the sander too hard. The problem with this method is also lead-based paint as the sander tends to convert everything to dust and direct them straight to your face, hair and lungs.

✓ Scrapping. This involves using a sharp, rigid putty knife or blade designed for painting scraping to strip the exterior paint. This method also involves dust but you’d have a better control over it than the sander.

However, in reality, painting your home’s exterior is actually one of the most significant improvements one can make as it tells your story and communicates your value.
