It lies 33 miles (53 kilometres) north of London, and boasts a population of about 9900. The 1881 Census records approximately thirty drinking establishments. Throughout the early 20th century, a sizeable number of pubs remained open, many of which were sustained by the adjacent and significantly bigger town of Letchworth, which had no alcohol retailers prior to 1958, and had only two pubs and a single hotel bar until the mid-1990s.
