Baldock

Baldock is a historic market town within the local government district of North Hertfordshire in the ceremonial county of Hertfordshire, England where the River Ivel rises. It is located 33 miles (53 kilometres) north of London, and boasts a population of about 9900. Nearby towns include Royston towards the northeast, Letchworth and Hitchin to the southwest and Stevenage towards the south. The contemporary layout of the town and several buildings in the centre date back to the sixteenth century, with the earliest dating from the fourteenth century. The town thrived where the old Great North Road and the Icknield Way crossed. Despite the building of the A1(M) motorway in 1963, which bypassed the town, and which was named the Baldock Bypass for some years, it was still a major traffic bottleneck till March 2006, when a new bypass removed the A505 road, part of the old Icknield Way to the east of Baldock. Since the 16th century, Baldock has been a centre for malting, subsequently becoming a regional brewing centre with no less than three large brewers in operation at the close of the 19th century, in spite of a decline in demand for the kinds of beer made locally. The 1881 Census notes roughly thirty drinking establishments. Throughout the early twentieth century, a large number of pubs remained open, several of which were sustained by the adjacent and significantly larger town of Letchworth, which had no alcohol retailers prior to 1958, and had only two pubs and one hotel bar till the mid-1990s. Its bigger population had for a lot of years visited both Baldock and Hitchin for refreshment. For all your property upgrades, be sure that you employ trustworthy experts in Baldock to make sure that you get the best quality service.

    FAQs

My garden is sloped, can I install a patio?

Patios are suitable for many gardens. If you do not have a flat area already, consider having some landscaping work done to create one. If your garden is on a very extreme slope, you could have a multi-layered (terraced) patio with steps between each layer. Ask for advice and get quotes if you're not sure.

How to seal cracks in a concrete driveway?

Cracks on your concrete driveway can look scruffy and unsightly. They can also lead to further damage, as moisture can get into the cracks and make them worse. So, it’s important to seal the cracks as soon as you can.

Start by cleaning the area and removing any loose materials. This will help any new materials you introduce to bond with your existing driveway. Then use concrete caulking or sealer to fill in the cracks. You’ll need to use a trowel to push the filler firmly into the crack.

Once you’ve filled in the crack, make sure you consult the product instructions and leave it for the amount of time specified before using your concrete driveway again.

Do I need to seal my concrete driveway?

Sealing your driveway isn’t 100% necessary, but it is recommended. It will help keep your driveway in good condition and increase how long it lasts. Sealer should be applied approximately once every 2 years, or when your driveway begins to show signs of deterioration.

How to resurface a painted concrete patio?

A big benefit to concrete is that you can paint it, making it easy to customise and coordinate with your outside area. However, it’s easy to resurface it too, so if you change your mind or inherit a patio that’s the wrong colour, you don’t need to worry.

Start by cleaning the surface with water and a brush. If you come up against any tough stains, you might need to use a detergent and water mix to remove them. Then you can prepare your resurfacer.

Generally, it’s best to apply resurfacer to a moist surface, although make sure you follow the instructions on the specific product you buy. You’ll need to mix the resurfacer with water, then pour and spread it on with a trowel or brush. You might need to apply multiple coats, and can add texture if you want to make the surface more grippy.

Ensure you protect any expansion joints in your patio with duct tape or weather stripping to stop the resurfacer from filling them in. You can also add a colour agent to your resurfacer before you apply it if you’d like to customise the colour.
