Newbiggin-by-the-sea
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is a small town and also civil parish in Northumberland, England, on the North Sea coastline. When a crucial port for shipping grain and a coal mining community, it is still a small angling port taking advantage of conventional coble boats. Angling has always been associated with Newbiggin, although later on several occupants were employed in coal mining. By the Victorian age, Newbiggin was Northumberland's favourite seaside community, drawing in thousands of site visitors daily in the summer season. In 1869, there were 142 cobles (fishing watercrafts) in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Newbiggin Colliery was sunk in 1908. The colliery closed in 1967, yet at its peak in 1940 1,400 males were used there. The previous Newbiggin Colliery Band is now the Jayess Newbiggin Brass Band, named for its head of state and previous participant, cornet tale James Shepherd. To day, there are 72 energetic firms based in Newbiggin.
