Elland
Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Reported as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town derives from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land in part or wholly surrounded by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and well-known history as a manufacturing and trading town. The town received a charter to have a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be had at the Manor of Elland and at two fairs through the year. The town soon transformed into a prime location for wool production, and its decrease in the 20th century had a pronounced effect on the population, with numerous mills being converted to homes, if they were not destroyed. Quarried near to the town after the establishment of the canal, durable flagstones were brought cheaply around the country. Elland was the home to the main factory of the manufacturer of Gannex products and it is currently the the home of the Dobsons sweet factory, which makes a series of old-school kinds of boiled sweets.
