Bellshill
Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is positioned ten miles to the south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles west of Edinburgh, as well as being close to other towns such as Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it has been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of about 20,000, a report by the Halifax Building Society indicated that in the spring of 2005, the town was the UK's property hotspot, seeing a rise in home prices by 46 per cent. This resulted in the standard house price in the area as being £105,698. It's believed that the town dates back to the seventeenth century, which initially contained a row of quarry workers' homes belonging to Mr. Bell, the owner of a stone quarry towards the south of the town. The development of Bellshill, however, largely occurred just after the quarry shutting at the start of the nineteenth century. Developments have continued all through the 20th century. In recent years, the Streetscape Project, a programme aiming to achieve the town's regeneration and to modernise the the town centre, took place between 2007 and 2010. This designed a one way system around the main street making the area much more pedestrian-friendly. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised specifically for producing respected and influential popular music, with bands which include the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub emerging from the town. A Channel 4 television series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, commonly referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
