Brierley Hill

Brierley Hill is a little town and electoral ward of the Dudley Metropolitan Borough in the West Midlands of England. It's positioned roughly 2.5 miles to the south of central Dudley and 2 miles north of Stourbridge. Brierley Hill was traditionally in Staffordshire, but is now part of the West Midlands metropolitan county ever since its establishment in 1974. Part of the Black Country, and in a heavily industrialised area of the Dudley Borough, it boasts a resident population of around 14,000 inhabitants, as per the 2011 census. Largely created by the Industrial Revolution, Brierley Hill boasts a relatively modern history, with the very first written records of the town going back to the 17th century. Originally established as a settlement in the woodland of Pensnett Chase, it began to expand rapidly after the chase's enclosure in 1748, and was first recorded on a map in 1785 following the mapping of the Stourbridge Canal. The town is mostly known for glass and steel manufacturing, although the business has declined significantly since the 1970s. On the list of the biggest factories in the area was the Round Oak Steelworks, which was shut and renovated during the 1980s to become the Merry Hill Shopping Centre. The Merry Hill Shopping Centre is immediately to the east of Brierley Hill. One of the biggest shopping centres in the United Kingdom, it was built between 1985 and 1989 on the grounds of Merry Hill Farm, the last functioning urban farm in the West Midlands. Since 2008, Brierley Hill, including the close by Waterfront Business Park and Merry Hill Shopping Centre, has been officially named the Strategic Town Centre of the Dudley Borough, with the purpose of making a brand new town centre for the borough. For all your home upgrades, make certain that you choose reliable pros in Brierley Hill to ensure you get a top quality service.

FAQs

What finish is best on a wooden conservatory?

When people talk about finishes on a wooden conservatory, there are a few different things that they may be referring to. Some may be referring to the colour and type of wood used to build the conservatory, but they may also be talking about the type of treatment used to protect the wood from the weather. We’ll cover both bases for what finish is best on a wooden conservatory here.

When you’re thinking about the best wood type and finish for the conservatory, it’s best to go with a hardwood. There are both hardwoods and softwoods, and hardwoods are the most durable. Oak is the most expensive choice but is also the most durable, so lots of people decide to go for this option. Other good choices that are slightly cheaper are Brazilian cedar and idigbo. Softwoods like European redwood or Siberian larch are cheaper still, but they won’t last as long, so it may work out more cost-effective to spend more on a hardwood.

Wood is a natural material, so it’s important to look after your wooden conservatory to prevent it from rotting or getting attacked by bugs and pests. Your conservatory will be exposed to all weathers, so you’ll need to use a good finish to ensure that it stays in tip-top condition for years to come. Your installer should be able to tell you what’s best, but some of the best finishes for a wooden conservatory include breathable varnishes and decking oil. However, if you do use an oil, it’s best to use a preservative treatment too; oil will only repel water. Joints are particularly susceptible to water penetration, so make sure you use a good wood treatment and focus on areas where water would pool during rain. Then you can apply a decking oil afterwards.

Do I need planning permission for a wooden conservatory?
The short answer is generally, you don’t need planning permission for a wooden conservatory. Conservatories come under permitted development rights, so you can usually build a conservatory without having to apply for planning permission. However, there are certain criteria that have to be met to ensure that your wooden conservatory comes under permitted development rights:
  • The rules only apply to houses – flats and maisonettes are not included
  • Only 50% of the area of land around the original house can be covered by extensions, including conservatories, and other buildings
  • You mustn’t build the conservatory higher than the highest part of the original roof
  • Where the wooden conservatory comes within 2 metres of the boundary, the height at the eaves can’t exceed 3 metres
  • A rear wooden conservatory can’t extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than 4 metres if it’s a detached house, or more than 3 metres for any other type of house
  • For side extensions, for example a lean-to wooden conservatory, it can’t exceed 4 metres in height and can only be up to half the width of the original house
Unless you’re planning on installing a very large construction, it’s very unlikely that you’ll need planning permission for your wooden conservatory. There are different rules for if your property is situated on a Site of Special Scientific Interest or conservation area or you live in a listed building, so make sure you investigate further if this applies to you. Your local planning office should be able to help or ask your installer who will be able to point you in the right direction.
What wood should be used for a wooden conservatory?

You might think that all wooden conservatories are the same. But there are actually lots of differences between them, and some conservatories are better than others. One of the most important factors to consider when you’re looking for a wooden conservatory is the type of wood that it’s made from. Generally, there are two different types to look out for: softwood and hardwood. So what wood should be used for a wooden conservatory?

Softwood conservatories are usually made from European redwood or Siberian larch. These types of conservatories are the cheapest wooden conservatories you can buy because the wood grows much faster than hardwoods. However, due to their soft nature, they may only last 7-15 years, reducing their cost-effectivity.

The best wood to use for a wooden conservatory is a hardwood. The most expensive type is oak, but you get what you pay for – it looks fabulous and it can also be coated with a bug and pest-resistant solution to increase its longevity. If you haven’t got the budget for oak, other hardwood options include Brazilian cedar, idigbo and luan, which are still great choices. Make sure you speak to your conservatory installer about the ‘closeness’ of the wood grains, as close-grained hardwoods are said to be the most suitable for conservatories. You should also check that your supplier has strict control of the quality of the wood so can ensure that it’s been well seasoned and prepared for use in construction.

Are lintels required for a wood-constructed conservatory?

When you build a new wood-constructed conservatory, or any type of conservatory, you’ll need to dig a trench for the footings. You’ll need to dig to a minimum depth of 600mm and at least 300mm below your property’s damp proof course. When you dig down, you might expose obstacles such as underground pipes.

If this happens, you’ll need lintels for your wood-constructed conservatory. These are usually concrete and protect the pipes or obstructions from being crushed. You may also want to use steel mesh for additional support.

Building Regulations state that if an opening is formed in a wall, the structure above the opening needs to be supported. This will be especially relevant if you’re building a wooden lean-to conservatory. It says that there are two ways that you can use lintels to provide support.

The first way involves using a steel lintel to support both the inner and outer leaf of a cavity wall. It can then serve as a cavity tray that directs moisture from the cavity through the outer skin of the wall as well.

The second way to use lintels is to use two steel or concrete lintels. They support each leaf of a cavity wall construction. You’ll need separate thermal insulation and a cavity tray as well.

Whatever type of lintel you use, it should have a suitable bearing onto the wall at each side. If you’re not sure, speak to the manufacturer of your wood-constructed conservatory, or ask a reputable company to install it for you.
