Elland
Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Documented as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town derives from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land partially or wholly surrounded by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and well established history as a production and trading town. The town acquired a charter to have a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be convened at the Manor of Elland and at two fairs during the year. The town quickly came to be a prime spot for wool production, and its decrease in the 20th century had a pronounced effect on the population, with several mills being converted to residences, if they were not destroyed. Quarried close to the town after the establishment of the canal, tough flagstones were brought cheaply around the country.
