Bellshill
Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is situated 10 miles south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles to the west of Edinburgh, as well as being close to other towns like Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it has been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 20,000, a report by the Halifax Building Society suggested that early in 2005, the town was the UK's homebuying hotspot, seeing a rise in property prices by 46%. This resulted in the average house price as being £105,698. It is believed that the town dates back to the seventeenth century, which originally featured a row of quarry workers' houses owned by Mr. Bell, the owner of a stone quarry in the south of the town. The improvement of Bellshill, however, mostly occurred soon after the closure of the quarry at the start of the nineteenth century. Improvements have continued all through the twentieth century. In recent years, the Streetscape Project, a programme aiming to achieve the town's renovation and modernisation of the town centre, took place between 2007 and 2010, which created a one way system around the main street and made the area significantly more pedestrian-friendly. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised specifically for producing respected and influential popular music, with bands including the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub coming from the town. A Channel 4 television series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, often referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
