The London Borough of Enfield is a London borough in north London with a few districts inside the borough straddling north-east London, England. It borders the London Boroughs of Barnet (to the west), Haringey (to the south) and Waltham Forest (towards the south-east), the districts of Hertsmere (towards the north-west), Welwyn Hatfield and Broxbourne (both to the north) in Hertfordshire, and Epping Forest (to the east) in Essex. The local authority is Enfield Council. It covers a total area of 31.74 square miles.
In accordance with population estimates in the middle of 2014, the borough includes a permanent population of about 324574 people. The present borough was created in 1965 in the former areas of the Municipal Borough of Southgate, the Municipal Borough of Enfield and the Municipal Borough of Edmonton. The Borough's Civic Centre is positioned in Silver Street, Enfield Town and is the location of the Council. Enfield Town is also home to the local credit union, North London Credit Union.
In 2007, Enfield Town centre completed a major redevelopment project. An extension was added to the existing retail area with numerous new shops. As well as this, a major redevelopment of Edmonton Green, including the shopping centre, an adjacent municipal housing over a wide area, started in 1999 in order to supply new housing, health facilities, a brand new leisure centre, a supermarket, and numerous other civic features.
