Dunbeath

Dunbeath is a town in south-east Caithness, Scotland on the A9 road. It was the birthplace of Neil M. Gunn (1891-1973), author of The Silver Darlings, Highland River and so on, many of whose books are embeded in Dunbeath and its Strath. Dunbeath has a very abundant historical landscape, the site of many Iron Age brochs and a very early medieval reclusive site (see Alex Morrison's archaeological study, "Dunbeath: A Cultural Landscape".) Of Dunbeath's landscape, Gunn wrote: "These small straths, like the Strath of Dunbeath, have this intimate elegance. In boyhood we get to know every square yard of it. We encompass it literally as well as our memories hold it. Birches, hazel trees for nutting, swimming pools with trout and also a sometimes noticeable salmon, river-flats with the wind on the bracken and going away rabbit scuts, a wide range of wild blossom as well as little bird life, the rising hawk, the unforeseen roe, the ancient graveyard, thoughts of the people who as soon as lived much inland in straths and also hollows, the past as well as today kept in a moment of day-dream." ('My Bit of Britain', 1941.). There is a community museum/landscape analysis centre at the old village college.

FAQs

Does CCTV work in the dark?

Most cameras have a night mode to capture video in the dark. They use an infrared sensor to detect infrared light. These pictures are black and white, but still retain plenty of detail. Cameras are also able to see and record in adverse conditions such as fog, dust and smoke.

Do alarms deter burglars?

Visible alarm systems can deter burglars. There are a range of options for what happens when an alarm is triggered. For example, there are bells only, alarm receiving centre, and homeowner monitored alarms. These are all effective as deterrence methods, and which you choose will depend on your specific needs.

Will my alarm system cause lots of false alarms?

Properly installed and calibrated alarm systems will very rarely trigger a false alarm. If you have pets you will need to use pet-friendly alarm systems. External sensors should be properly calibrated to avoid triggering in the wind or rain. NSI is a recognised standard for all alarm installations, check the NSI flag is displayed on an installers credentials.

How many sensors do I need?

The number of sensors you need will depend on the size of your home. Most alarm systems feature 2-4 passive infrared sensors (PIRs) for motion detection, and 2-4 magnetic contact sensors on doors and windows. An alarm company will advise you of how many your property will need upon an inspecton.
